The
Church of God by Faith, Inc. in Stuart was
built in 1942 by Elder George Robinson. Some
Men of God that have worked and served in
the capacity as pastor are: Elder Perry,
Elder Clay, Elder Cobbs, Elder Barr and
Elder Charles and Elder David Lewis, Sr.
The building had
been closed for many years. When Elder John
Robinson, Jr., was appointed District
Superintendent for the Florida East Coast
District. Mother Susie Benjamin spoke to him
about reopening the church. (Her concern was
for family members who were living in the
area that she wanted the Lord to saved, as
well as others.)
Before attending the district meeting, Elder
Coleman, and Elder Royal visited the
designated area and spoke; “We believe the
Lord will bless.” Then during the district
meeting it was asked; “Who would go to
Stuart?” Elder David Lewis, Sr. responded to
the call.
Early in
1963, Elder Lewis came to Stuart. For a
while he and his family commuted back and
forth from Fort Lauderdale to Stuart. Later
on in the same year, he and his family moved
to the area. Minister Charles Hampton and
his family came with them. As time
progressed, Minister Alton Burris and his
family also joined them. Both Ministers
assisted Elder Lewis until missions for them
came along.
The Lord
saved the first member in 1963, Sister Betty
Newton – who is still with us today. (Since
that time, many souls have been saved). In
December, 1980 the Council of the Church of
God by Faith, Inc. appointed Elder Lewis to
pastor in Fort Lauderdale. But, in December,
1992 he was re-appointed back to Stuart.
Then in December 2003, Elder David Lewis,
Sr., retired as pastor. He continues to
serve the people of God assisting as Senior
Pastor. |
